Awakened from their ancient sleep
The vile spawn of the witch's dying breath
Clawing and gnashing from their embryonic grave
To follow the scent of the cursed bloodline
Ascending from pitch black
Ravenous for the souls of the damned

Chapter One - The Barn
05:38
|
|

Unleashed
The blood red sky
Swallows the sun
Shadows slither over fields of dust and dying dreams
The stench of decay
Hangs like bodies swaying lifeless
Wafting from the derelict barn
Where they lurk in darkness
Sickening paranoia
something's watching
inhuman eyes glare from the shadows
whispers like the dead leaves rustling
A wave of nausea paralyzing as his foot crosses the threshold
sinister cackles from the rafters
repel him from this den of evil
In the blackest night-
Their voices echo
Outside the window
Twisted claws scratch the glass
A waking nightmare
The sun rises on a massacre
The cattle gutted and bled out
Turning the soil a putrid red
His sanity pushed to the edge white knuckling the axe the barn door splinters casting sunlight on the horror within the writhing mass necrotic skin the gore stained teeth the paralyzing stare from ghastly eyes that rip into his soul and taste the fear within
They
Lurk
In the darkness, watching, waiting, ravenous
They
Lurk
In the shadows of his nightmares creeping crawling ever closer
They
Lurk
Like phantasms in the gloom of the eventide
They
Lurk
He loads his gun and pulls his family closer as the darkness falls

Hostages in isolation
The truck eviscerated, eerie silence on the rotary
Their mother paralyzed by fear their father haunted by the darkness
The children look through claw scratched panes, within the shadows of the barn
Malevolent eyes stare back beckoning
The sun descends
The dark invitations cast
Like whispers in the dreams of the innocents
Awakened enthralled by the summoning
They're helpless to resist the call
Roused from his tortured sleep
To the horror of the children’s empty beds
Frantic
Heart pounding
As he breaks through the gates terror stricken
spellbound
they're frozen
as the doors open wide like the jaws of the beast
lunging
he snatches the boy
pulling him back from the maw
and screams the girl’s name
frozen in horror
as the darkness swallows her whole

With bloodied hands he pounds the aging wood and screams his daughter’s name
Cursing at an absent god to drown the vile cackling that echoes from within the pitch black den of evil, nest of sin, pillagers of his soul
Consumed
By grief
His heartbroken cries
Are answered by a hellish choir of grinding teeth
A sickening
Symphony
Claws lacerate his mind
Clutching the boy in his arms he flees the beckoning abyss
Run
To
The
Light
Get
In-
Side
Looking back, inhuman eyes glare from the shadows
Silently stalking their poisoned prey
Enthralled
The whispers
Guide the boy through the darkened halls
Small hands
Grip the blade
As the blackness consumes his soul
Creeping
Slowly
Towards the one who gave him life
Weeping
Broken
She’s lost in her own grief until she feels the knife slash across her throat
Behind the door
A blood soaked nightmare
Her lifeless eyes burn into his memory
From the darkness
His first born howls
possessed
unholy
the vile thing
lunges thrashing slashing snarling
tearing at his eyes his throat with unrelenting savagery
holding his son
to his shattered heart
he begs forgiveness
and snaps his neck
why
why

The sunrise
Through blood stained glass
The stillness
The reaper leaves behind
The anguish
Drained by grief he slips into tortured sleep
Raining blood the lifeless eyes and slashing fangs the blade rips through her melting flesh
the echoes of their screams
black
death
savage and merciless suffocating
the boy's bloody corpse it rises
pointing to the derelict structure
there within the darkness
a faint glimmer of light
from the black abyss
a voice calls out
he wakens from the nightmare crying out his daughter's name the certainty that somewhere in the dark her precious soul is still untouched
all is not lost
shaking
bloody
clinging to the remnants
of his ravaged sanity
he stumbles towards
the wretched barn
challenging the sun the hive of evil moans malevolence
the death rattle of the claw scarred doors
from the shadows wicked eyes glare making his skin crawl
his thoughts of storm of fear, sadness, and hatred
and madness
cutting the rope from the tree where they kissed for first time
lost in her eyes that now stare lifeless
he wretches at the loss of everything that ever mattered in his world
he anchors the rope to the tractor where he held her ring in his fingers
thinking of the words to ask her to the spend the rest of her life in his arms
a life now shattered
dreams drowned in blood
did he tell her he loved her
before the darkness ripped her away
the flamethrower strapped to his back he sways before the barn and remembers her heartbeat through her mother's skin
he kicks the doors
summoning
daylight
into the nest of horror
cleansing flame
rips into
shrieking
ghouls of darkness
pushing through
slashing claws
his daughter’s hand
finds his own and grabs hold
throwing her safety
their eyes meet once more
before the claw gashed tank ignites

Epilogue - The Survivor
01:52
|
|
||
Gentle hands lift her from her bed of grass
Underneath the rusting tractor
Blue and red lights flashing
Men and women wearing uniforms
Fill the yard between the house and the barn
She sees the bodies on the ground
Draped like ghosts under white sheets
A woman's hand dangles in the grass
Tattooed with dry blood and wearing her mother's wedding ring
Wrapped in a blanket in the back of an ambulance
A woman with a badge and a kind face asks
Sweetie, do you know where your daddy is?
The girl's eyes follow the rope from the tractor
To the frayed ends that lay at the barn door
In the gloom she sees the scorched earth
Ashes falling like grey snowflakes
A chill runs up her spine
As a chorus of inhuman whispers calls her name
